“In the US there is a community that gets built regardless of which specific country you are coming from”
“However I look, when I leave my name I can't get a phone call back about an apartment In New York city” “ I was definitely more of a black nationalist than I was a Puerto Rican Nationalist. Maybe because the concept of black nationalism and the black liberation movement was so much more accessible” ____________________________________________________________________________ “I wanted to come in and change how the police department operated.” “I don't call someone who shoots someone in the back a police officer, my inclination is to call them a murderer" “It's the responsibility of the white community it's the responsibility of our leaders to realize black people are not shouting racism and discrimination and exploitation for no reason… their problems are real.” ______________________________________________________________________________ “We don’t want to see the racism we may be holding on to” “ I want to bring up race in a frame that lets my children think there is no difference, but the mere fact that I am bringing it up could suggest that there is a difference” ______________________________________________________________________________ “ I've had older white men come up to me and say “aw man if this was 40 years ago I could have just done whatever I wanted to you.” “The one drop rule, meaning that one drop of black blood makes you black, that was to keep as many people oppressed… as possible but on the other side one drop of anything else completely dilutes you as a native person.” “If it were up to the American government, natives wouldn’t be around, because after a certain time, that blood will dilute.” |
Reflection-
I find myself able to connect with the “white people on race” In a way that I share many of the same feelings of awkwardness and uncomfort. I found the line “I want to bring up race in a frame that lets my children think there is no difference, but the mere fact that I am bringing it up could suggest that there is a difference” very interesting as I feel I can connect to this same mentality. The idea of telling focusing on making it so that people are equal and that the unfair division is non existent while also not wanting to bring out the idea that the races genetically and without historical influence are nothing but equal. Personally I think it is important to note that things like where somewhere lives can be influenced by race so that people can work on changing and fixing these issues. I also felt that a few of the points made in the “latinos on race” where very applicable to many topics other than race. I believe this line is very relatable to many people regardless of race- “In the US there is a community that gets built regardless of which specific country you are coming from”. The idea of people coming together out of a simple shared feature or interest relates to even me personally, especially regarding the LGBTQ community.

Defining Racism Mind Map
For this assignment we read through a passage on race written by Beverly Tatum. This passage contained many interesting ideas relating to race including a re-imaging of racism, phrases like systematic racism and topics like white privilege and stereotypes. The main point of all of this passage is to offer a new definition of racism being- a system of advantages based on race that leaves white people on top and those of color on the bottom. Things like white privilege and stereotypes then come out of this system from available opportunity and not being exposed to other ideas respectively.
My biggest takeaway from this project was definitely the different perspective to defining racism and all of these terms for things very much present in modern day society. Though I have my own reasons for personally not defining racism the same way as Tatum I do believe the concept behind the definition definitely exists in our modern world. Whether it is neighborhoods or job opportunities the playing field is unequal from the start because of the laws and systems in place from highly racist times- so i find Tatum helping to give these terms and ideas a grounding in the world by giving them a definitions very powerful. |

Overview
After watching a documentary on how prison systems have become the new outlet to racism and slavery called "the 13th" we where grouped in to groups of 3-4 to further research the modern prison system with pre-set specific topics assigned to each group. Me and my group's topic was to research about women in prison. after researching for a bit we decided to specifically cover pregnancy in prison to see how prison systems handle situations such as that and see if proper care was given to the pregnant inmates. upon researching pregnant inmates in America though we quickly found out that not only was care for pregnant inmates not ideal but it was outright awful! Some of our research led us to find that meals where not at all properly nutritional for pregnant inmates and that many would receive very minimal if not at all any specifications for their needs relating to things like medication. Me and my group also found that there is no nationwide policy for what happens to pregnant inmates and that 6 states had no laws banning shackling women in labor. We also did research on other prison systems in other countries and where surprised to find that pregnant inmates where treated much more ideally that those that resided in American prison systems. We found that in Russia and Mexico inmates where allowed to care for their birthed young in prison for about 3-5 years and that in Australia there is a program set up to keep parents and their young together after a parent is released from prison.
